How did this collaboration come to fruition?

I’ve always had respect for Selberan with its modern-classic design philosophy. So, when I moved into The Gardens Mall where Selberan has had a beautiful store for many years, it was such a natural conversation with Selberan as our design philosophies are similar.

Have you always been interested in jewellery?

Which female isn’t interested? (Haha.) But more importantly, I value designs and the artisans who are able to express their craftsmanship in the finished piece. Here is a confession: during my younger days, I actually wanted to take up jewellery design at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts but my parents thought that graphic design will be better, as it’s easier to find a job.

Tell us about your inspiration behind the Celebration collection by Selberan and Celest Thoi.

The vision for these wedding bands is associated with Selberan’s heritage and my design philosophy: timeless, simple and elegant. The Celebration by Celest Thoi collection was inspired by my love for lace. I love the way lace flows and moves with such a feminine silhouette from afar, while containing delicate details up close. I translated this inspiration through precious metals by using subtle curves and angles to reflect the gentle nature of lace. These are limited bespoke pieces with a classic canvas that can be customised by adding precious stones of different sizes according to the wearer.

Describe the entire process of working with Selberan.

The Selberan team are worldclass, so this collaboration progressed without a hitch. They were able to capture the essence of my design and produced exactly what I had in mind. It was a symphony of efficiency with them.

What was your fondest memory or what did you enjoy the most about this collaboration?

The fondest memory was just before Selberan showed me the finished pieces for the very first time. It felt like one of the brides I dressed seeing herself wearing my design for the very first time. I have nearly forgotten what that feels like, and it felt amazing to have those butterflies flutter seconds before the ‘unveiling’.

Selberan’s latest Celebration jewellery is available at its boutiques in Pavilion KL, The Gardens Mid Valley City and the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, Setapak
