An Artist’s Touch

Imbued with a personality of its own, each Omar Khan rug has a story to tell, as told from the creator’s own words

SKYE

“In the same abstract series as Anders, I sketched the design for this rug quite quickly. For what I thought was an easy design, turned out to be hours of brainstorming with the factory and production team to figure out how to translate my drawing to the finished product.

“Fleshing out the intricate line work requires a level of skill that very few tufters have. There are lines of silk that only reveal themselves if you walk in a certain direction.”

LI LING

“I have always loved this design because it’s quite dramatic, but at the same time very restrained. It’s got something to do I think with the neutral colour palette and the light contrasts of the white. It’s a subtle combination on a very ornate pattern.

“In testament to this duality, Li Ling can be found at The Yoga School in Singapore, a private residence in Jakarta, and The Pure Gym in Hong Kong. It’s been used in retail spaces and commercial office lobbies.”

JOHANNA

“Named after my grandmother, this was my very first attempt at rug designing. I was working with Biyan Living at the time in Jakarta, and in fact it was my grandmother who was my first commission. She wanted me to design something to fit into her living room. Designing and home decor was a big part of how we bonded and spent time together. We would regularly spend afternoons moving the furniture and decorative items around her house to ‘joosh’ up the space. It’s funny because now that I think about it, I spend a lot of afternoons with my mom now doing the exact same thing!”
