Sunway International Schools Kuala Lumpur (SISKL) proudly marks its one-year anniversary at its new campus, and this celebration coincides with the highly anticipated appointment of Richard Thomas Cherry as the new principal, commencing his tenure in January 2024. Cherry, a seasoned and visionary educator with over three decades of invaluable experience, brings with him a rich history in education and school leadership, and represents a blue-chip appointment for the new dynamic campus.

At the core of Cherry’s educational philosophy lies a steadfast dedication to student-centred learning. He prioritises the importance of fostering engagement, critical thinking, differentiated learning, and places a strong emphasis on English language development. In addition, his vision for SISKL goes beyond academic enrichment. Cherry envisions a school environment that is not only academically enriching but also welcoming, safe and supportive. With an “open door” policy, he encourages positive ongoing collaboration among parents, students and staff to create a thriving community.

Selecting the right educational institution is pivotal in laying a robust foundation for a promising future. SISKL stands out by offering a comprehensive range of curricula, including Cambridge International Programme (IGCSE), Canadian (Ontario) curriculum, and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). This diverse range caters to the needs of a growing community of bright and ambitious students.

Primary curriculum (Year 1 to Year 6) builds foundational skills with a strong focus on inquiry, building English and Mandarin language skills, fostering creativity and cultivating analytical and problem-solving skills. Moving into lower secondary (Years 7 to 9), the Cambridge IGCSE programme

continues its tailored approach, ensuring a seamless progression in building foundational skills. The curriculum remains focused on exploration, encouraging students to delve into their interests while developing essential skills. Upper secondary (Years 10 and 11) marks a crucial phase, aligning with students’ aspirations, fostering curiosity, and honing critical thinking. SISKL’S holistic approach ensures students are well-prepared for future challenges from Year 1 to Year 11.

The Ontario Canadian curriculum at SISKL draws inspiration from the esteemed Canadian educational system. Emphasising critical thinking, creativity, and holistic development, this curriculum harmonises effortlessly with Canadian values, championing inclusivity and open-mindedness to create a nurturing environment. Students are encouraged to explore their interests and talents in an environment that promotes a wellrounded educational experience. This prepares students for academic challenges and also nurtures personal growth, encouraging them to become well-rounded individuals capable of navigating the complexities of the modern world.

The globally recognised International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at SISKL is renowned for its rigorous curriculum, preparing students for success in higher education and life beyond academia. Designed for students in the final two years of secondary education (typically Years 12 and 13), it not only stresses on academic excellence but also on personal development. Transcending traditional subject boundaries, the IBDP encourages an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Core components such as the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay contribute to the development of inquisitive, knowledgeable, and compassionate individuals who are ready to make positive contributions to the world.

Situated in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, the award-winning and eco-friendly 9-acre campus accommodates kindergarten to preuniversity level. Within its walls, 74 modern classrooms, dedicated spaces for arts and music, and stateof-the-art labs for science, provide a conducive learning environment. The facilities extend to a swimming pool, a football field, and a multipurpose hall designed for a myriad of activities.

As we look forward to the future, SISKL remains committed to providing a nurturing and enriching educational experience. With Richard Thomas Cherry at the helm, the school is poised for continued growth and success, staying true to its mission of fostering well-rounded individuals who are ready to face the challenges of an ever-changing world. Here’s to many more years of excellence at Siskl—nurturing Minds, Building Characters.
