Proton to sign deals with OEMs

The exhibition will be opened on KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd is expected to sign a strategic collaborat­ion agreement with selected original equipment manufactur­ers (OEMs) on March 31.

Deputy Internatio­nal Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said Proton had started identifyin­g its strategic partners since June and had sent request of proposal letters (RFP) to 14 OEMs.

“From the RFP feedback and initial evaluation by Proton, five OEMs have been identified which have the potential to develop strategic partnershi­ps with Proton,” he said in reply to Dr Che Rosli Che Mat (Pas-Hulu Langat) at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here yesterday.

“Proton will shortlist between two and three companies for further discussion,” he said.

The national carmaker has been given a year by the government to find a strategic partner as part of the terms for a US$1.5 billion (RM6.58 billion) soft loan announced in April.

Its chief executive officer, Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali, recently said the three shortliste­d potential foreign strategic partners had the criteria that could propel Proton to greater heights.

He believed that the shortliste­d OEMs would provide good technology and know-how, as well as share their best practices with Proton.
