UMNO ASSEMBLY: We’ll raise economic, environmental and social issues, says state Umno chief

PENANG Umno plans to raise the alleged weaknesses and shortcomings of the DAP-led Penang government at the upcoming Umno General Assembly.

Penang Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman said these matters had to be shared with Umno delegates from around the country.

“There are issues in Penang that we have to share. Among them are matters concerning the interests of the people, including the Bumiputeras in the housing, economic, welfare, social and environmental fields.

“I noticed that these issues are either given low priority or none at all (by the Penang government).”

The Umno General Assembly is scheduled for Nov 29 to Dec 3 in Kuala Lumpur.

Zainal said Penang Umno would also focus on the preparations for the 14th General Election.

He said it had selected three spokesmen to raise its points at the assembly, namely Penang Umno Liaison Committee secretary Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir to speak during the debate on the policy speech of Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak; Tasek Gelugor Umno division chief Datuk Shabudin Yahaya to speak during the debate on the motion on religion and Bagan Umno division chief Datuk Shaik Hussein Mydin to speak during the debate on the motion on the economy.

Asked what Penang Umno expected from the general assembly, he said it hoped that the assembly would provide a boost for Umno members to consolidate and strengthen the party in facing the next general election.

Zainal urged Umno members to remain loyal to the party in facing challenges, including the emergence of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

Commenting on the strength of Umno to regain the people’s support in Penang, he said the political party had the expertise in serving the people and Penang Umno would continue to serve the people at the branch-, divisional- and state-levels.

He said Penang Umno would strive to regain the people’s support for Barisan Nasional (BN).

He added that this required the support of BN’s component parties.

Zainal said even if Penang Umno were to win all the 20 seats it contested, it would not be enough to form a state government without the victories of the other BN component parties such as Gerakan, MCA, MIC and PPP. Bernama
