New tandem pilot wanted
cycling coach Johari Nayan is on the hunt for a new tandem pilot after measuring Malaysia’s performance against the world’s best at the recent Para-cycling Track World Championships.
Malaysia’s Muhammad Afiq Afify Rizan and Muhammad Khairul Adha Rasol won the bronze medal in tandem B.
“We need to change our pilot, we need young pilots,” said Johari.
“In that perspective, we don’t have world-class talent and we have to source talents from former state junior riders to be trained under para-sports,” said Johari yesterday.
The former coach to national road cyclist Anuar Manan added that despite the bronze success in Los Angeles, he will continue to mix-and-match athletes in order to achieve the best results inSeptember’s Asean Para Games.
“I’m a very technical coach and the athletes may not be pleased about me switching things up but there’s the mission in September, Japan Open in November, New Zealand/Australia in January 2018 and the Commonwealth Games in May.”
“There might be another shake-up at the Commonwealth Games because there are limited events so we need a stronger pilot.”
