Silver Gaurus finally shine

- Farah Azharie

SILVER Gaurus won the AirAsia Malaysia Rugby League title for the first time on Sunday.

Coach Mohamad Nazeer Mohamed Nesharah’s team defeated Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) JLJ 33-20 in their final Division One match.

Silver Gaurus attacked early with two consecutive tries by scrum half Mohamad Nor Adol with conversions by fullback Muhammad Harith Iqbal Muhamad Anhar. Harith made it 19-0 with a try in the 15 minutes

JLJ got on the scoreboard through an unconverted try by prop Lailatul Norazlee Shaari and a penalty by Farid Ahmad just before the second half.

Prop Shafee Burhanalis continued the scoring for Silver Gaurus with two back-to-back tries and ended the day with a traffic run by flanker Muhamad Alif Mohd Anuar to take home the winners’ cheque for RM3,000 and a promotion to next season’s Premier League.

In Division Two, Lumut-based Orca Navy emerged as victors after their narrow 12-10 win over Terengganu Rugby Team (TRT).

But it was TRT who were first up on the scoreboard when they were awarded a penalty after just eight-minutes of play.

However, a converted try by Orca’s lock Khairil Mizan Ishak put the navy team ahead 7-3.

An unconverted try by Mohd Saiful Izwan Rosli saw Orca at 123 just before half time.

A last ditch attempt by TRT’s Muhamad Fadhil Mohd Saufi (unconverted try) in the 35th minute was not enough as Orca walked away with RM2,000 in prize money.

The Premier League semi-finals will be on March 25 where Mersing Eagles will take on ASAS RC, and Keris Conlay will meet Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Lions.
