A dream for many
STUDYING in the United Kingdom is a dream for many. The quality of education is among the best in the world, with UK universities consistently placing near or at the top of world university rankings.
Several alumni from British universities shared their experiences of living in the UK.
UK is a wonderland for culture and the arts, with deep roots in supporting the creative arts. Museums and galleries abound, and many exhibitions make their way here when on tour around the world.
Syibratul Fauzana Mohd Pauzi read her MA in Design Strategy at Brunel University in Uxbridge, west London. As she was relatively near the city centre, she spent almost every weekend visiting museums in the city.
Almost every big-name musician is either from the UK or Europe, or has made his way to the UK. Coupled with comparatively cheaper ticket prices than in Malaysia, this means music-loving students are spoilt for choice.
Ili Farhana Mohamed studied her MA in Music Industry Studies at the University of Liverpool, home of many recording studios.
While studying, Ili got herself two on-campus jobs: a disc jockey for the campus radio, and a photographer for the campus paper.
Culture, the arts and entertainment are not just to be appreciated passively in the UK.
In fact, Malaysians in the UK can contribute to its growth.
Take Noorafifah Salihah Mohd Noor, for example. During her MSc in Medical Humanities at King’s College, she was also a regular attendee at poetry events hosted by the university.
So much so that she was invited by its theatre troupe, The King’s Players, to perform with it at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year.

Working as a student
As a student, you’ll always be on a budget. So if you have extra time on your hands outside of schoolwork, getting a job is simple. A student, Kathia, experienced a whole gamut of jobs while studying her BSc in Food Studies at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Travelling in the UK and beyond
The UK is the transportation hub of the world, so it is little wonder that travelling in and around the UK is cheap and simple.
Ili often found deals for busses between Liverpool and London that cost as low as £1 one way, useful for concerts in the capital.
It is incredibly easy to travel between European countries.
A well-rounded experience
Syibratul is still in touch with her friends from Brunel.
When asked for advice for students going to the UK, she said: “Make friends outside your own circle, region and country. That way, you will discover and appreciate the cultural similarities and differences of people around the world.”
Come to the Study UK Exhibition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Hall 5, on March 18 and 19, between 1pm and 6pm, to find courses for you and get information about student life in the UK.
