PUTRAJAYA regional perspectives, as well as the challenges faced in the fight against IS and countermeasures that could be taken.

“He will also share Malaysia’s experience and ideas on countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism.”

Wisma Putra said the meeting was expected to identify a mechanism to counter IS attacks.

The meeting would also try to find ways to stop the spread of IS’s extremist ideology through false narratives, it said.

The meeting would also discuss how to address humanitarian needs, and the demining and stabilisation assistance needed in the newly-liberated areas in Iraq and Syria that were previously under IS control.

Wisma Putra said Anifah’s participation in the meeting reaffirmed Malaysia’s support and commitment towards the Global Coalition in its campaign to defeat IS.

“Malaysia believes that international collaboration, such as through this multilateral initiative, is critical and has become one of the important components in Malaysia’s counterterrorism strategy.”

Besides attending the meeting, Anifah will also meet his US counterpart, Tillerson, for the first time to discuss issues of common interest, as well as regional and global developments.

The meeting is significant as it is Anifah’s first working visit to the US under the administration of President Donald Trump. Bernama
