ADOWNPOUR in the northeast area of Penang Island wreaked havoc and triggered flash floods in low-lying areas, with a waterspout reported at sea yesterday.

The heavy rain started at 5.54pm and water in some areas rose to ankle-level.

Residents in Jalan Sungai Pinang were caught off guard when rain caused the drain to overflow into their neighbourhood.

A noodle seller there was forced to close his business as the heavy rain did not show any signs of abating.
