Institute credits industry work as success factor

Accounting Research Institute (ARI) of University Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) clinched the Excellence in Higher Education Award at the Global Good Governance Awards (3G) 2017 in Dubai recently.

ARI received the award for its commitment and dedication in advancing academic research and training, specifical­ly in the area of good governance and social responsibi­lity.

ARI director Professor Normah Omar said the institute’s collaborat­ive works with MACC, Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Institute of Integrity, Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance, Royal Malaysian Customs and Companies Commission of Malaysia has caught the attention of the organiser which is a large data house in United Kingdom.

“Our ability to work closely with these agencies is key to this award.

“We work collaborat­ively with them on financial criminolog­y, forensic accounting, corporate governance rating, corporate integrity tool and anti-bribery management system. They have used them in pursuit of enhancing their own competency.

“We know that to make real impact on the business community, we must work with industry players and government agencies.”

“ARI has also been active in social media communicat­ion through our blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and portal promoting UiTM and ARI for its translatio­nal research work in the areas of governance and integrity,”

Normah added.

The institute was nominated alongside three other internatio­nal higher learning institutio­ns namely Pakistan Higher Education Commission, Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University and Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University. A voting system was created to get the winner.

UiTM vice-chancellor Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Hassan Said said: “The 3G Excellence in Higher Education Award is well-deserved, given ARI’s commitment and steadfast resilience in pursuing academic excellence. This award reaffirms ARI’s position as a global player in the field of good governance.”

ARI is among six pioneer research institutio­ns that were awarded the status of Higher Institutio­n Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in 2010 by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.

The institute previously won the Global ASEAN Risk Management Award in 2016, the ACQ Global Award in both 2015 and 2016; and the Global Islamic Finance Awards in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
