‘Vietnamese of­fi­cials bribed over lum­ber’

BANGKOK: An en­vi­ron­men­tal watch­dog or­gan­i­sa­tion is ac­cus­ing Vietnamese of­fi­cials of tak­ing pay­offs to ig­nore smug­gling of lum­ber from neigh­bour­ing Cambodia. A re­port is­sued yes­ter­day by the UK-based En­vi­ron­men­tal In­ves­ti­ga­tion Agency charges that mil­lions of dol­lars have been paid by Vietnamese tim­ber traders to Vietnamese and Cam­bo­dian of­fi­cials. The Vietnamese of­fi­cials are paid off in ex­change for grant­ing im­port quo­tas and Cam­bo­di­ans are paid to open up log­ging ar­eas.
