3 to pay US$8.9m over data theft

NEW YORK: Three Chi­nese hack­ers who stole in­for­ma­tion on deals from two top law firms, here, and used it to trade stocks were or­dered to pay US$8.9 mil­lion (RM38.71 mil­lion) in fines, dis­gorge­ment and in­ter­est. Dis­trict judge Va­lerie Caproni is­sued the

May 5 or­der in favour of the United States Se­cu­ri­ties and Ex­change Com­mis­sion, but the hack­ers — Iat Hong, Bo Zheng and Hung Chin — aren’t in the US. Hong was ar­rested in Hong Kong in De­cem­ber and is await­ing ex­tra­di­tion, while the where­abouts of the other two aren’t known.
