‘For you, my mama’

-

S. KISONA presented her mother with the perfect Mother’s Day gift when she won her maiden international title at the Victor International Series yesterday.

The 19-year-old, hoping to make an impact in the national senior squad, clawed back from a game down to upset third seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia 10-21, 2116, 21-19 at the Sudirman Badminton Hall in Surabaya.

In March, Kisona had bagged the national Under-21 title in Penang when she downed national teammate M. Thinaah in the final.

“I am very happy because finally I have an international title to show for,” said Kisona, who settled for the bronze medal at the 2013 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

“What makes my victory sweeter is that I get to dedicate this to my mother since it’s Mother’s Day. It is also an early gift for my parents (A. Selvaduray and S. Valarmathi) as they celebrate their wedding anniversary on May 18 (Thursday).

In the women’s doubles, Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi won their first title as a pair after beating second seeds Dian Fitriani-Nadya Melati of Indonesia 21-16, 1621, 21-19. Fabian Peter
