Inspector among 7 charged with graft

Seven men, including a police inspector and two prison warders, were charged at the Sessions Court here yesterday with corruption.

Inspector Kavikumar Perumal, 27, who has since been sacked from the force, faced two charges: soliciting RM15,000 from Mahadi Mohd Nor at Lot 421, Kampung Banggol Ubi Keling in Guar Periuk, Rantau Panjang, at 5pm on Nov 22, as an inducement not to take action against him for keeping a suspected stolen car, and soliciting RM10,000 from Mahadi at 5.30pm on Nov 24 at the same place.

Judge Adli Ghalib set bail at RM3,000 with one surety for both charges pending mention on July 3.

Chief Inspector Mohd Zamri Abdullah of the Pengkalan Chepa prison was charged with accepting RM3,000 from Mohd Fakhrul Akashah Mat at a KFC Restaurant in Baung, Pengkalan Chepa, at 6pm on Dec 20 last year as an inducement for not placing convict Wan Muhammad Azlan Wan Mahamod at Blok Insaf after he tested positive for drugs.

Lance Corporal Dzul Azam Nani was charged with accepting the money on behalf of Zamri at the same time and place.

Adli set bail at RM5,000 with one surety each and fixed mention of Zamri’s case on July 4 and Dzul Azam’s case on June 15.

General Operations Force policeman Muhammad Harris Mohd Rafe, with the Eighth Battalion, was charged with three counts of soliciting and receiving bribe from Na-Emah Hama as an inducement for not taking action against a vehicle, which was carrying 70 boxes of cooking oil and 200 trays of eggs.

He was charged with soliciting RM10,000 from Na-Emah about 10am at Lorong Perumahan Rantau Bakti on Aug 14, 2015, receiving RM5,000 at 6.30pm the same day and soliciting RM3,000 from Na-Emah at 9.30pm at the same time and place.

The case will be mentioned on June 19.

The fifth accused, Syed Ahmad Farris Al-Muhajir, was charged with giving a bribe of RM1,000 to Tanah Merah Hospital’s administra­tive assistant Mohamed Zaid Mohamed Zain as an inducement for not carrying out checks on the hospital’s upgrade and renovation to the roof and roof structure at the hospital’s administra­tive office about 3.30pm on Sept 17, 2014.

The judge fixed June 20 for remention.

Contractor Ahmad Hizwani Shafii, 35, and unemployed Sharuddin Ab Ghani, 30, were jointly charged with attempting to make a false claim (amount not stated) from the Kota Baru Mara Deputy Assistant Director at the Kelantan Mara office here on July 17, 2013.

Hizwani faced another charge of making a false claim to Tanah Merah Mara assistant director Mohd Azhan Ismail between 8am and 5pm on May 16, 2013.

Both cases will be mentioned on June 18.

Muhammad Harris, Syed Ahmad, Ahmad Hizwani and Sharuddin were all granted RM5,000 bail with one surety.

All the accused pleaded not guilty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shahida Muslimah Roslan appeared for the proseution.
