Liu Ying out for six months

-

MIXED doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying is out of the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 28-year-old recently underwent surgery on her right shoulder in Germany (Sportsklinik Halle) and is expected to be ruled out for the next six to nine months.

BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria confirmed the news regarding Liu Ying on Wednesday before sending the Malaysian contingent off to Gold Coast, Australia for the Sudirman Cup that starts next week.

“As you know Liu Ying is in Germany and has just undergone surgery on her shoulder.

“The surgery took 45 minutes and I am happy to say that the doctors have identified the issue finally. All this while, it was an internal damage that was not really clear when we got the initial MRI scan results.

“Following the surgery, Liu Ying will not be able to hit overhead shots for the next four months.

“The doctors will now look into her knee problems. Liu Ying (who underwent surgery on both knees in 2014) has yet to fully recover and is still very much troubled by it.

“All in all, she will be placed under a rehabilitation programme for the next six to nine months.

“Depending on her progress, we hope to see her back on court as soon as possible,” said Norza.

National No 2 Tan Kian MengLai Pei Jing have been named by BAM to replace 2016 Rio Olympic Games gold medallists Chan Peng Soon-Liu Ying at the world meet in August.

It is still unclear if Peng Soon will compete at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games with a scratch partner.

The other Malaysian mixed doubles who are expected to play at the biennial Games are Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie. Fabian Peter
