PERSONAL issues are believed to have led to the murder of a woman who was allegedly shot dead by a police inspector, who is said to be her husband.

State police commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor said the suspect, who was arrested about six hours after the murder, has been remanded for a week to facilitate investigation into the case.

Mazlan said the suspect, in his 30s, would undergo a medical examination to determine his mental health status.

“We are checking whether the suspect is suffering from depression or other mental problems,” Mazlan said at the police headquarters here yesterday.

He said police were also investigating the relationship status between the victim, Siti Nadirah Abdullah, 33, and the suspect from Perlis.

“Based on our records, the suspect is a divorcee and this led us to assume the deceased was his girlfriend,” said Mazlan.

“We, however, believe that the suspect had secretly married the victim but he did not declare his marriage to our management.

“A member of the force must declare his marriage, supported by a wedding certificate.”

Netizens disputed the relationship between the victim and the suspect when a social media posting suggesting that the woman was the girlfriend of the police inspector went viral on Facebook. The victim’s 62-year-old mother, who spoke on condition of anonymity at Serian Hospital yesterday, insisted that her daughter had married the suspect. Mazlan could not confirm her claim that the victim was two months pregnant.

The suspect, who is attached to a police station in the sub-district of Belaga, had attended a meeting at the state police headquarters in Kuching prior to the murder.

He was alleged to have shot the victim twice, once on the neck and once on the chest, at the latter’s house in Kampung Kakai, Serian, near Kuching at 3.15pm.

The suspect fled the scene in a Proton Saga but was apprehended at a supermarket in Matang Jaya, Matang, on the same day.
