Christian reaches Asian Junior final

-

CHRISTIAN Didier Chin will qualify for the Wimbledon and US Open junior competition if he reaches the final of the Asian Junior Championships (Grade B1) in Pune, India, today.

The 17-year-old made the semifinals with a solid 7-6 (14-12), 6-4 win over seventh-seed Dhruv Sunish in a last eight match yesterday.

Christian will face India’s Megh Bhargav Patel for a spot in the final. The other semi-final pits India’s top seed Siddhant Banthia against unseeded Nitin Kumar Sinha.

The unseeded Malaysian needs to up his game today as he had lost to Megh in a recent junior tournament.

“Christian will break into the top 100 of the ITF Junior rankings if he beats Megh today.

“If he achieves his dream, Christian will qualify for the main draw of the Wimbledon and US Open Juniors later this year,” said national coach S. Selvarajoo when contacted in Pune yesterday.

On the win yesterday, Selvarajoo said Christian played to tactics and was composed throughout the match.

“He played from the baseline and mixed his shots at the net to beat Dhruv. It was a nervy tiebreak in the first set but Christian kept his focus and won.

“Megh will not be an easy opponent tomorrow. Christian needs to play a mixture of styles against Megh,” Selvarajoo added.

Christian, ranked 202 in the ITF Junior rankings, is among those shortlisted for the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games in August. Ajitpal Singh
