MAIS OUTLINES GUIDELINES FOR SELANGOR REPS, MPS
Step taken after PKR MP gave speech in mosque, incurring Selangor sultan’s wrath
THE Selangor Islamic Council (MAIS) has, on Friday, issued a list of dos and don’ts to assemblymen and members of parliament (MPs) in the state.
It came following the controversy involving Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah, who incurred the wrath of the sultan of Selangor by giving a speech at Masjid AnNur in Kampung Melayu Subang last week.
It was learnt that his speech touched on matters related to conduct in mosques and surau in the state, among others.
Selangor State Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh confirmed that they received the guidelines on Friday.
She said this when asked whether Selangor Pakatan Harapan leaders would discuss and issue any order against giving speeches in mosques, following Sivarasa’s action.
“There is no need to discuss the matter, as MAIS has issued the dos and don’ts to all representatives of the people in Selangor.
“We received them from MAIS yesterday. It is quite clear that everyone needs to follow (the guidelines).”
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had, in his decree on Friday, made it clear that Sivarasa had “crossed the line”, saying he was upset with the PKR representative.
On whether she would continue her practice of joining Muslims to break fast at mosques, Yeoh said she did it as a symbol of respect for Muslim residents in her constituency.
Yeoh, who is also Subang Jaya assemblyman, said her presence at the mosques was not political and she had not delivered a speech inside a mosque.
“I attend breaking of fast events out of respect for the Muslim community in Subang Jaya, not for any political programme. I have never entered a mosque unless invited. Titah Tuanku sentiasa dijunjung.” Meanwhile, Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) director Datuk Haris Kasim said they had set up an investigation panel to probe the committee members and officials of Masjid An-Nur for allowing Sivarasa to deliver a speech in the prayer hall.
He said the panel, comprising four members, was led by JAIS Mosque Management Division principal assistant director Idris Ramli.
“Give us some time to conduct the investigation. It will include all aspects.
“The panel will call those involved to take their statements. Panel members will go to the mosque during the probe.”
