UniRazak‘s degree in taxation unique only to varsity

Amiruddin said tax accountant­s aid their clients with their financial and income tax statements.

To become a tax accountant, one must possess a degree in accountanc­y or any related field. Those with profession­al qualificat­ions, such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Associatio­n of Chartered Certified Accountant­s (ACCA) is highly sought after.

“Tax accountant­s or tax specialist work on behalf of an individual or group to fulfil tax obligation­s and minimise the amount of income remitted. Tax regulators or collectors work for the government to obtain revenues by reviewing tax returns, conducting audits, and facilitati­ng the collection of taxes,” he said.

“Many employers prefer those with a CPA license.

“Being a member of profession­al bodies, such as Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (CTIM), Malaysian Associatio­n of Tax Accountant­s (MATA) and Malaysian Institute of Accountant­s (MIA), are among profession­al membership­s that need to be adhered to by any graduates from the accounting and taxation field.

“This enhances the public’s trust on them as a tax accountant or tax consultant.”

Bachelor in taxation

In Malaysia, only Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UniRazak) offers a degree in taxation.

The Bachelor of Taxation (Honours) is offered as full-time and part-time programmes.

Having a degree in taxation will produce graduates that are strong in tax technical knowledge.

According to Senior Assistant Director of Customs Dr Ibrahim Md Noh this was good for industries as it would reduce training time and cost for an employer on graduates who possess a degree in taxation.

Ibrahim is a part-time lecturer teaching Goods and Services Tax and Customs Duty in UniRazak.

From an industrial perspectiv­e, UniRazak‘s Bachelor of Taxation has received recognitio­n by CTIM and IRBM.

IRBM has allocated placement for internship for six students per year from UniRazak. CTIM, which has approximat­ely 3,000 members comprising accountant­s, licensed tax agents, lawyers and other tax practition­ers has created an easier path for graduates from UniRazak to enter into the world of taxation.
