POLICE have arrested five members of the Susu Kangkang Gang in connection with 30 cases of shoplifting involving formula milk at hypermarkets and convenience stores.

On Wednesday, police caught them red-handed at a 99 Speedmart outlet in Dataran Sunway after monitoring their movements since last month.

It is learnt that the group’s three female members would steal cans and boxes of formula milk by hiding them in girdles worn under loose dresses.

Their male accomplices would act as lookouts.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din said the suspects, aged between 25 and 49, had been stealing formula milk since 2015.

Police investigations revealed that the suspects were shoplifting formula milk in the Klang Valley, including Petaling Jaya and Kota Damansara.

Zani said the suspects had admitted to being involved in at least 10 of the theft cases.

He said police began tracking the group’s movement after two of its members got involved in a scuffle with a security guard at Paradigm Mall in Kelana Jaya.

The security guard had lodged a report after accusing the man and his accomplice of stealing infant formula from the mall. However, they fled the scene after assaulting the guard.

Zani said the group would sell the stolen goods to sundry shops in squatter and construction areas at a cheaper price.

He said formula milk was in high demand in such areas but were too costly for people there.

Twenty-one cans and 17 boxes of formula milk were found in the suspects’ car and home. The suspects, from Sabah, have been remanded until next Wednesday to facilitate investigations.
