Suspects to be probed for another rioting case
GEORGE TOWN: In a turn of events, the five youth arrested in T. Nhaveen’s assault case will also be investigated for rioting and extorting money from another teen last month.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said this followed a report lodged by the 19-year-old on Wednesday, asking police to reopen an investigation into the incident, which he had reported, but later retracted.
Anuar said the teen had lodged a report on May 5, claiming he was beaten and extorted by the suspects in Nhaveen’s case.
“Three hours after lodging the report, the complainant retracted it, saying he did not wish to prolong the case.
“Since he has lodged a report to reopen investigation, we will do so. It will be investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 385 of the Penal Code for extortion.”
He said two of the five suspects, whose remand order expired on Wednesday, had been rearrested and remanded until today to assist in the investigation.
“The other three, whose remand order expires tomorrow (today), will also be rearrested to assist the investigation.”
The two suspects, in Form Four and Form Five, were produced at the magistrate’s court here for remand yesterday.
Lawyer V. Partipan, who represented the duo, said they would assist police in a riot incident that happened last month.
“From what I understand, the case has been classified as ‘no further action’.”
It is learnt that the May 5 incident happened at a convenience store in Gelugor, where the victim was working as a cashier.
