No cross-border cannon battle in Sungai Golok

-

PASIR MAS: A video clip of a battle involving cannons has gone viral as it is said to be shot at the Malaysian-Thai border in Rantau Panjang, here.

In the clip, villagers from both countries each took positions on the banks of a river claimed to be Sungai Golok, the common border of Malaysia and Thailand.

Booming sound and bright flames can be seen emanating from the cannons from both sides of the rivers.

The video has gone viral since yesterday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Ibrahim Saad yesterday said the location of the video shoot was not here.

Ibrahim said he was told that the information accompanying the video that the “cannons war” was in Rantau Panjang was not true.

“I checked as soon as I knew about the video. The Rantau Panjang stretch of our border is manned by the army and they will never allow such an incident to occur. However, we will continue to investigate the matter.”

The three-minute clip shows people from two villages firing at each other across a river with their cannons.

The cannons were believed to be made out of bamboos, normally built by youths to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
