Rocker Awie chokes up during onstage performance

-

THINGS got emotional on stage for popular rock singer and actor Datuk Awie, who teared up after singing a heartfelt rendition of the late Datuk Sharifah Aini’s Kasihnya Ibu, during a breakingof-fast event with Wings and Superfriends at Premiera Hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The 48-year-old, whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Osman, was seen wiping away his tears, before apologising to the audience for getting all choked up.

The Tragedi Oktober hitmaker said he was unable to hold back his tears as the song, Kasihnya Ibu, evoked memories of his late mother, who passed away two years ago.

“Whenever I’m reminded of my late parents, my emotions build up. Just a few days ago was the sixth anniversary of my father’s death, so I was overwhelmed. As we were rehearsing for the performance, I had a feeling that I might cry on stage. The song ‘spoke to me’. I just had to let it out,” he told the New Straits Times after the event.

After Kasihnya Ibu, Awie serenaded the audience with several hits from Wings such as Lena Diulit Mimpi Sayap Ilusi, Sembunyi; and Raya songs like Musafir Di Aidilfitri and Raya Yang Sempurna. He was joined onstage by Wings member Edrie Hashim on the guitar.

Also performing were Liza Hanim, Kudin from 3 Juara, Rody Kristal, Eddie from Def-Gab-C and Kumpulan Acapella who made up the list of Wings’ Superfriends.

On a happier note, Awie, who tied the knot for the third time with 29-year-old Sharifah Ladyana Syed Shamsuddin in October last year, is excited to be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri with his better half.

“We will be in Thailand for Hari Raya, while my children will be with their mothers,” said Awie who has five children — Puteri Aleefa Antasha, 15, and Puteri Aleeya Antasha, 16, Putra Ahmad Merrah, 9, Putra Ahmad Rezzki, 8, and Puteri Qaseh Antasha, 6.

The two elder children are from his first marriage to actress Arni Nazira, whom he married in 1998 and divorced in 2005, while the rest are from his second marriage to Rozana Misbun, which lasted a decade, between 2006 and 2016. BY SYAHIRAH MOKHTAZAR
