Where ice-cream is toast

Coconut ice-cream has never tasted better, especially the new additions to the menu at Sangkaya, writes Tan Bee Hong

HAVE you ever eaten toast with icecream? I haven’t. So when I am offered two slices of Hainanese toast with thick slabs of frozen butter and two scoops of kaya ice cream peeping out from between, I am thrilled to bits. It brings out the child in me again and reminds me of the days when the ice-cream vendor would “potong” icecream and sandwich it between two wafers.

Malaysian Toast (RM6.90) is just one of the new, exciting items on the menu at Sangkaya and you can get them at any of the 25 outlets spread out all over the peninsula.

The ice-cream is available in a cone (RM3.90), cup (RM5.90), waffle bowl (RM9.90) and its signature serving (RM12.20).

There are two ranges: Normal and premium. You can also grab a pint to bring home (RM19.80/normal and RM21.80/premium). The premium range includes a rich Chocolate Royale and Gula Melaka. Other new flavours are Rose Bandung, Kaya and Mango.

ICE, ICE BABY!

Sangkaya is known for its ice-cream which uses coconut milk instead of dairy cream. This is great news for vegetarians and the lactose intolerant. The ice-cream is churned out fresh daily.

It launched Gula Melaka and Rose Bandung at its outlet in Kelana Jaya, Selangor recently.

These make perfect treats for Ramadan and Hari Raya Puasa as they go very well with all the traditional kampung favourites such as ayam masak merah, ikan sumbat and the various curries.

you can lick. Great on its own or in a waffle bowl. The addition of gula Melaka offers sweetness with a comforting familiarity in the taste of natural palm sugar.

Crafted specially for Ramadan and Hari Raya, the festive Rose Bandung is delicately fragranced. Good on its own, it’s even better in Sangkaya’s concoction of Bandung Bliss (RM12.20) and Bandung Blitz (RM9.90). Bliss has four scoops of Rose Bandung icecream and silky coconut flesh served in a halved coconut shell while Blitz is a coconut shake with cincau (grass jelly), a scoop of Rose Bandung ice-cream, whipped cream and lashings of rose syrup on top. Only available till July 31, with free Hari Raya packets.

COOL CRAFTINGS

If you want more than just a scoop or two of Sangkaya ice-cream, there are, apart from the earlier mentioned Malaysian Toast, interesting options such as Coconut Cookiez, Freshly Baked Waffle and Ice Cream Campur.

Ice Cream Cookiez (RM4.90) is premium coconut ice cream sandwiched between two coconut cookies. A lovely tea-time snack on a hot day.

I never used to like the waffles at Sangkaya. However, the new recipe waffles are now the bomb, with a buttery flavour that can be quite addictive. Freshly Baked Coconut Waffles (RM12.90) come with three scoops of ice-cream, a sprinkle of toasted
