Teenager dies in crash after arriving home for Raya
ALOR STAR: Thirteen hours after arriving from Kuala Lumpur to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with his family, Muhammad Fahmi Othman was killed in an accident in Jalan Kuala Kedah here.
Fahmi, 18, arrived at his home in Kampung Padang Jambu, Simpang Empat Kangkung at 12.30pm on Wednesday, then took his mother and four sisters to shop and break fast at the Alor Star Tower.
He then dropped his mother and sisters at their house at 10pm before going out again at 11pm to meet his best friend, Muhammad Naqib Ahamad, 18.
However, Fahmi failed to return home. At 4am yesterday, the family received a call from the police informing them about the accident.
Fahmi’s mother Supawan, 62, said her son was behaving differently when they broke their fast together on Wednesday.
“He hugged me and kissed my cheek as if he knew he would leave me for good,” she said.
She said Fahmi, who worked at a hotel near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, drove home from Kuala Lumpur with his sister, Fazliana, 25, and two nephews.
“I was worried about their safety on the long journey. In the end, he died 10 hours after spending time with me,” she said.
He was scheduled to join the National Service Programme in Langkawi next month, she added.
Fahmi and Naqib were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a tree near SMK Tengku Laksamana in Jalan Kuala Kedah early this morning.
In the 2am incident, Fahmi had lost control of his vehicle, skidded into the opposite lane and crashed into the tree.
Naqib died at the scene while Fahmi was pronounced dead upon arrival at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.
Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin said initial investigations suggested that the driver was speeding during the crash.
He said that no brake marks were found on the road and the car was seriously damaged on its front and left side.
“Based on early reports, no other vehicle was involved.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.”
