Definitely not purposeful pop

-

WITNESS Katy Perry

Idid not expect tobe such a flop. I did try to find something to love about her songs but to no avail. Compared to her previous work, is such a huge downfall. Let’s be real, alone produced at least five No. 1 singles, which also makes it the second album ever in history, after the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, to dominate charts with so many top songs in a single album.

While her previous album, may have only produced two No. 1 singles (Roar and is nowhere close and absolutely no match to what we’ve seen or heard from Perry before.

I remember her describing as “purposeful pop” at the recent Grammys red carpet, with the word witness plastered across her red veil.

Word got out, fans got excited and now the cat’s finally out of the bag. Too bad that Perry didn’t seem to deliver what she had promised to the world.

The lyrics were way too cringe-worthy. “They never thought the swish god would take it this far, get my pimp cup, this is pimp shit, baby, I only rock with Queens, so I’m makin’ hits with Katy”, Nicki raps on Swish Swish.

The track was an obvious diss towards Taylor Swish (Swift) but guess what, Perry recently swapped the lyrics at her live performance in LA after her public confession/apology. So I guess the song holds no meaning after all? Disappointment is an understatement. The album gets worse (no offence) with the shocking release of

yet another insubstantial song. I couldn’t decide which was worse, the song or the music video. Instead of storming up a meal, Perry plays the cuisine itself, ready to be chopped and cooked. It was very weird. If her weekend livestream was a marketing gimmick, then somebody needs to be fired. Everything was caught on camera and watched by the world, from her exboyfriends, depression, suicidal thoughts and even herself not wanting to be Katy Perry but her real self, Katheryn Hudson.

Necessary? I don’t think so. Sure, it’s always nice to get a little personal with our favourite artistes once in a while but too much of something isn’t a good thing either.

Perry’s surely delivering the latter just too much. I’d be lying if I say I don’t miss the bright, fireworks, roaring Perry. She dominated pop music better than anyone else in the first decade of her pop music career.

If this really is as Perry claimed “purposeful pop”, I’d rather it not be purposeful at all.
