MALAYSIANS must stay united to fight against external attacks that may affect the country’s image, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the sovereignty and freedom of the country should not be compromised by foreign media that attempt to provoke national politics.

Zahid, who is also home minister, said media should be used as a medium for unity, not a platform to raise negative issues that could spark racial sentiments.

“We have nourished the spirit of Bangsa Malaysia. But foreign parties may envy our strength and uniqueness.

“This is our challenge because they are trying hard to break the unity between the people and the leadership.

“During celebrations, we must remain positive and reject the issues raised by the foreign media (about Malaysia),” he said in a statement in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Zahid said external attacks were deliberately planned by certain quarters to negatively affect Malaysia’s image.

He said Malaysians needed to remain calm and be wise in judging defamatory and slanderous remarks.

“I urge Malaysians to stay united to defend the country.

“The government is committed to helping the people address the issues of cost of living, tax and social problems, such as bullying.”

Zahid wished everyone Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and invited the people to celebrate the occasion in the spirit of muhibah.

He encouraged people to attend Aidilfitri open houses to strengthen ties.
