MACC: MMEA cleanest govt agency

-

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has hailed the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) as the cleanest government agency, with zero corruption.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (management and professionalism) Datuk Seri Mohd Jamidan Abdullah said the agency was “always willing to report any bribery attempt” to the commission.

“We have rewarded a few MMEA officers for their commitment to fighting corruption.”

He declined to reveal the number of officers who reported such attempts or how they were rewarded.

He also refused to say how many government officers had reported bribery attempts, instead saying: “More and more are coming forward.”

MMEA director-general Admiral Datuk Zulkifli Abu Bakar said his 4,700strong agency was offered bribes, but none, as far as it was known, had accepted it.

“Due to the nature of our job, the agency is exposed to bribery. People have offered cash to my officers, but they turned it down and reported it to MACC.”

He said this at the signing of a corruption-free pledge between his department and MACC.

Reiterating his zero tolerance to corruption, Zulkifili said preventive measures had been taken to ensure that MMEA remained clean.

“We monitor our officers. We know there are bribery offers. If we catch any officer taking money, we will take action against him.”
