Philanthropist’s RM1 ‘hotel’ meant for the poor
KUALA LUMPUR: Imagine forking out RM1 for a hotel stay or 10 sen for a piece of furniture.
This is what Kuan Chee Heng is doing as part of his effort to aid the poor and desperate.
The philanthropist, known for helping the less fortunate, introduced the “Pasar 10 sen” or 10 sen market where donated items, such as a washing machine or a piece of clothing, are all sold at the price of 10 sen.
He said this is to protect the “dignity of the poor”.
The 53-year-old from Puchong said his love for the country had prompted him to help the poor.
“As we live in a diverse country we should help each other and walk hand in hand for a better and peaceful nation,” said the founder of the Community Policing Malaysia.
“The reason why I charge the items or accommodation (at such low prices) is for them (the needy) to feel responsible and keep their dignity intact.
“Sometimes free things are taken for granted.
“We need to show that these transactions will at least provide them a feeling of responsibility over their purchases,” the businessman said.
Despite his critics, Kuan launched his latest project, the RM1 “hotel”, which catered for those with relatives admitted at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Putrajaya and where they can stay at only RM1 per night.
The double-storey house, which can accommodate around 18 people, comes complete with basic amenities.
Located at Taman Puchong Perdana it was launched two days ago.
It currently houses two families affected by a fire tragedy and a father who is undergoing treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
Visitors can book transportation, which is available for those planning to visit their family members at the hospital.
Kuan said the occupants must show a letter of proof from the hospital or they could refer to the hospital to book a room.
He said the rent for the house was paid by businessman Datuk Paul Lim.
