2-day remand for ex-aide of DAP assemblyman accused of sexual assault
GEORGE TOWN: The former aide of a DAP assemblyman, detained on Thursday night for allegedly sexually assaulting a college student, was remanded for two days to assist investigations into the case.
The 50-year-old man’s remand order, granted by assistant court registrar Ahmad Tajudin Zain, expires today.
He was represented by lawyers E. Gnasegaran, J.T. Jothi and S. Rethinakumar.
“Our client has been cooperating with the police since he was taken in. We hope for a fair investigation,” said Gnasegaran outside the court room yesterday.
The case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force on a person with intent to outrage modesty.
The man was ordered to turn up at the northeast district police headquarters to have his statement recorded on Thursday and was subsequently detained.
Police said the black outfit worn by the victim on the day of the incident on July 6 would be retrieved if necessary.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said police were investigating the case for sexual assault and not rape.
“We will take the dress to be inspected if it is related to the case,” he said yesterday.
The 21-year-old victim claimed that the suspect’s semen could be traced on the black shorts that she wore during the incident.
She told a press conference yesterday about what had transpired between her and the accused
Anuar said police had retrieved closed circuit television footage from the entertainment outlet.
“We have looked at the footage, but none of the cameras we-re pointed at the car park, where the incident allegedly took place.
“The footage we checked only sho-wed the suspect and the victim walking together inside the outlet.”
