THE National Civics Bureau (BTN) plays an important role in shaping the mindset of the people through Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday.

Najib said BTN could assist the government in developing the country, ensuring that it continued to be relevant to the people.

“What the millennial generation faces today is not the same as what the earlier generations faced.

“They (the millennials) are not influenced by political threats and they don’t have to worry about fighting against the colonials for independence.

“The millennials don’t have to go through what the governments of earlier generations had gone through.

“We need to instil a strong spirit of patriotism into our new generation, who is the future of the country,” said Najib in a speech at the BTN Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Akademi Kenegaraan here.

He added that the generation today was fortunate because it had better access to education.

“This is possible because the government had strived to achieve this.

“Today, our generation can enjoy good fortune because of our past struggles.

“We must press on and continue with our struggle for the general election and following general elections,” he said.

In his address, Najib also thanked former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for making BTN a success and ensuring that it stayed relevant.

The event was attended by more than 3,000 guests, comprising past BTN participants, cabinet ministers including Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.
