Dr M hasn’t decided to contest

KULIM: Pakatan Harapan (PH) pro-tem chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he is yet to decide whether to contest in the 14th General Election (GE14).

The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman said there was no urgency for him to decide on the matter as there were ample candidates to represent the party in the polls.

“As I have said, I will only consider contesting in the next general election if the party has a pressing need for me to do so.

“However, we have many capable candidates to represent the party, so I am not much worried about making a comeback in the general election,” he said after attending Kedah PPBM Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here yesterday.

Present were PPBM president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his deputy Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.

Later in George Town, Dr Mahathir said the opposition parties might contest under the Pakatan Harapan banner.

“This way, we can get the best support from the people and bring down the existing government,” he said.

He also admitted that he had worked with his long-time nemesis, Lim Kit Siang, to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Speaking at the Penang PPBM Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house, the former prime minister said: “Everyone knows that Kit Siang and I are not the best of friends. In fact, we are enemies. But we came together to topple Najib.”

Present were DAP secretarygeneral and chief minister Lim Guan Eng, Muhyiddin and Mukhriz.

Dr Mahathir also said he was aware that his popularity had slid since he joined forces with him.

“However, the support for me has since increased.

“There is no more objection of me working with Kit Siang and even from Pakatan Harapan adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This is the unity we achieved as we all have the same aim ... that is to topple the current government,” he added.
