Green Beat Live boosts environmental awareness
KUALA LUMPUR: Green Beat Live, a live music event aimed at raising environmental awareness among the younger generation, was an overwhelming success with the participation of more than 500 people.
The event, which began from 3pm to midnight yesterday, featured percussions performed using instruments made from recyclable materials, such as plastic bottles, cans and card boxes.
The crowd was treated to performances by bands, vocalists and dancers, as well as a fashion show.
The event was a collaboration between drummer and percussionist Lewis Pragasam, Red Bull Malaysia, HELP University and La Bodega.
Pragasam, the event’s director, said he hoped Green Beat Live would inculcate a love for the environment, as well as highlight the importance of recycling to the public.
“It is a beautiful world out there. However, the sad part is that we are destroying it through wastage, littering and pollution.
“Seeing that there is not enough awareness, I’ve decided to create this event, which incorporates music. We know that music is one of the most powerful tools of communication. If used in a positive way, it can do wonders.
“Therefore, through performances using recyclable materials, the crowd gets to appreciate how everyday items and things they would discard can be used in a fun and useful way, hence reducing waste,” said Pragasam, a resident artist at HELP University.
Gastrodome Management Services Sdn Bhd general manager Seelan Sach, whose company owns La Bodega, said by providing the space for the event, the company could raise awareness about recycling.
“The focal point for us is always about giving back to society by raising awareness about environmental issues, and of course the need to recycle,” he said, adding that this was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility effort.
Red Bull Malaysia marketing consultant Paul Srichandra emphasised the need to create a green environment through recycling.
