6 WOMEN TO CONQUER HEIGHTS
Expedition members to scale highest peak in Europe on Aug 31
IN the spirit of the 60th Merdeka celebration, six women, including cancer survivor Rene’e Aziz Ahmad, are set to conquer the highest peak in Europe on Aug 31.
Dubbed “Kembara Srikandi Prihatin”, the expedition will see an attempt by the six women to scale the 5,642m high Mount Elbrus in Russia, from Aug 23 to Sept 5.
Joining Rene’e, 56, are Puteri Umno members Nurul Huda Samsuddin, 31, and Nir Azmin Adnan, 34, as well as Ummu Farah Haidar Zulkifli, 30, Fazilah Abd Manan, 41, and Harian Metro journalist Fairul Asmaini Mohd Pilus, 35.
The group plans to start the climb on Aug 25, and will make a summit attempt on Aug 31.
Organised by National Adventure Association (NAA), the expedition is supported by Puteri Umno with Harian Metro as the official media.
The programme is held in conjunction with the Negaraku campaign, which is aimed at cultivating patriotism, love and loyalty among Malaysians.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak handed over the Jalur Gemilang to project director Ummu Farah.
Present were Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati and NAA president Tan Sri Khalid Yunus.
Mas Ermieyati said the expedition, which gathered women of different background, was aimed at empowering women and promoting an active lifestyle.
“The programme also shows
that life crises will not stop women from contributing to the nation with the right support system.
“These climbers, especially Rene’e, who has survived breast cancer, prove that you can overcome any obstacles that will test your agility, mental and physical strength, as well as team spirit,” she added.
