PJ FOGGING LEAVES BAD TASTE IN MOUTH

-

A PETALING Jaya resident is concerned about the weekly fogging carried out in his neighbourhood, saying that it leaves a chemical “aftertaste”.

Louis, 48, from Jalan 5/19 in Bukit Gasing, asked Actionline whether the aftertaste from the chemical used in the fogging would pose a health risk to residents.

He also wanted to know whether it was necessary for the authority to conduct the activity weekly.

“The activity has been going on regularly, especially in Jalan 5/4, and the smell of the chemical spreads to my area. If you happen to be outside after the exercise, you will be left with an aftertaste in your mouth.

“The fogging was carried out in the morning of Aug 15 and the night of Aug 22.

“I closed all the windows and doors but could still smell the chemicals.

“I would like to know if this is healthy, and how often does the local authority conduct such activities in residential areas?”

ACTIONLINE:

A Petaling Jaya district Health Office spokesman said chemicals in fogging were allowed to be used in public, and would not pose health risks.

The spokesman said the chemicals (Pyrethrins) were from a natural source, and was widely used in pests and mosquito control for a quick knockdown of the pests.

“It (fogging) is categorised as class three, which can be used in public areas. It is unlikely to pose any danger to people.

“Maybe that person is sensitive to it. I would suggest that person seek treatment from a doctor immediately.”

A Petaling Jaya City Council spokesman said the council would conduct the activity only when there were reports from the Health Ministry on dengue cases in the areas.

“We will send our team to the affected areas immediately after we receive a call from the ministry.

“However, we do not carry out the exercise often because mosquitoes will become immune to the chemicals.

“Residents have claimed that the activity is carried out weekly by us, but it is not. Maybe it is done by a resident association.”
