Queen of J-Rock comes to Malaysia

Kevin Field ON Sept 23, award-winning Japanese rock star Anna Tsuchiya will headline the Japan x Malaysia Friendship Concert 2017, which will be held at Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach in Petaling Jaya.

“I will be delivering an energetic rock performanc­e of my songs made for the anime series Nana. This is my first visit to Malaysia, so I’m looking forward to experienci­ng its nature and culture, as well as its cuisine!” she told the recently.

Celebratin­g her 15th anniversar­y as a singer this year, Tsuchiya is among a small number of Japanese stars who have succeeded in music, film and fashion. Of Japanese-Polish-American parentage, the mother of three started her career as a model at the age of 14, before slowly easing her way into a singing career, and later acting.

To date, the artiste, known for her hits Lucy, Guilty and Rose, has eight albums under her belt, and has starred in 10 movies, including Kamikaze Girls.

“I will be going on a tour to celebrate my 15th anniversar­y. After that I plan to start working on a new album. Look out for it!” she said, adding that her experience­s learning different cultures had influenced her music greatly.

Joining the 33-year-old star on stage at the concert are fellow Japanese acts, namely former member

of Japanese girl group AKB48 and now-soloist Tomomi Itano, Harajuku dance rock band An Cafe, electro DJ/rap duo Charisma.com and idol group Juice=Juice.

Malaysian artistes set to take the stage are rapper Joe Flizzow, vocal powerhouse Jaclyn Victor, actor-singer Alvin Chong, rock band Bunkface and musical/jazz band Fazz.

Organised by IME Malaysia, Toybox Projects and Ishida Taiseisha Inc, the concert is aimed at strengthen­ing bonds between Japan and Malaysia, as well as enhancing musical and cultural understand­ing.

Concertgoe­rs will enjoy musical performanc­es and learn more about Japan’s tour destinatio­ns and culture at the event, which is held in conjunctio­n with the 60th anniversar­y of Japan and Malaysia’s business partnershi­p.
