National Women’s Day focuses on entrepreneurs
KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has lined up a series of programmes to celebrate the national Women’s Day, which fell on Aug 25.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, said this was to honour their contributions to the society.
With the theme “Women: Changing the Global Economy”, this year’s celebration will focus on celebrating women entrepreneurs for their efforts in developing the nation.
“We have many women entrepreneurs who are competitive, and their drive has helped them thrive and enter the international market.
“This has contributed to the nation’s economy and we believe women’s role should be recognised as they are continually increasing the human capital in the job sector,” said its minister, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
She hoped that more women would join the celebration this year, with Malaysia playing host to the Global Women’s Trade Summit and Women’s TN50 dialogue at Berjaya Times Square, here from Sept 4 to 5.
“The summit would gather delegations of International Women’s Federation of Commerce and Industry from 12 countries. This would allow women from different backgrounds to share ideas, aspirations and also products,” said Rohani.
“According to Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Corporation, there are about 20.6 per cent women entrepreneurs in Malaysia.
“The ministry aims to have at least one per cent of SME women entrepreneurs penetrate the international market through this summit, which would see a participation of 1,500 delegates, and hopefully this would increase to 10 per cent by 2020,” she added.
Women’s Day Celebration this year has also kickstarted with special lanes for women at government agencies, which began on Aug 25.
It will continue until Sept 8. A special sermon will be held at the National Mosque, here, Putra Mosque in Putrajaya and Sungai Besi Mosque.
