Hisham: Umno cannot afford to be complacent

-

BANGI: Umno needs to continue building on its strength in preparation for the next general election.

Its vice-president, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, said Umno could not afford to be complacent just because the opposition was divided.

“I just came back from Semberong, Johor, for several Umno branch meetings, and I reminded them on the need to strengthen the party.

“The opposition parties are neither sincere nor consistent.

“They will do anything they deem necessary to achieve their goals,” he said, adding that the opposition only prioritised their personal interests or those of certain groups.

Hishammuddin was speaking after launching the Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ) Malaysians United Run (MUR) 2017 campaign at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia yesterday.

Hishammuddin, who is also the IOJ patron, said positive values must be instilled in youth, as they were the country’s future movers and shakers.

He expressed hope that the institution would show to the world that the majority of Malaysian youth possessed strong moral values.

He said programmes aimed at nation-building, such as MUR, must be promoted as politics, religion, and race had no place in them.

“The vision of Datuk Onn Ja’afar is relevant as he was a champion of unity.

“As his grandson, I play an important role in continuing his legacy.

“It is not easy to execute this in the digital world, where new methods, such as social media, are used to instigate and sow hatred.”

Hishammuddin announced that he would sponsor one of the beneficiaries of MUR, Siti Nor Hawa Ramli, 38, to perform umrah with her two sons.

Siti Nor Hawa is one of 50 beneficiaries from poor and underprivileged families who will receive financial aid from IOJ.

Participants in the biennial event will be flagged off from at Dataran Merdeka on Nov 18. Some 40,000 runners from public and private universities are expected to take part.
