Ali and Ain do muay squad proud

-

THE national muay squad concluded their campaign at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) with a commendable two gold at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) yesterday.

As expected, Mohd Ali Yaakub and Ain Kamarrudin delivered the gold in the 54kg and 57kg weight classes, beating Thailand’s Surachai Nakthaem (30-27) and Thachtana Luangphon (29-28) in their respective finals.

Tengku Sharizal Tengku Abdul Rahman settled for silver in the 67kg class after losing 30-27 to Mana Samchaiyaphum of Thailand in the decider.

Muhamad Samsi Mohd Noor had earlier this week clinched a bronze for Malaysia in the men’s 71kg class.

National coach Bernard Radin said he was very pleased with the performance of his fighters.

“I believe our performance here proves that muay does have a future here in Malaysia,” said Bernard.

“Our target was to win two gold but we also managed to win other medals which is a bonus for us.

“I have believed from the start that Ali and Ain could do it and they have proved themselves here.”

Bernard hopes that both the Sports Ministry and National Sports Council will continue to support the sport.

Ain dedicated the gold to his father Kamarudin who passed away due to cancer last week.

The Kuala Kerai-born fighter said it has been a tough period for him.

“I felt a little pressured during the fight but managed to pull through thanks to the support of my coach, family and all the supporters here,” said Ain.

“I am grateful to be able to win, this gold is for my late father and also all Malaysians.” Fardy Bungga
