Wedding planner remanded 2 days in fraud probe
KLANG: A wedding planner suspected of cheating more than 100 couples was remanded for two days at the magistrate’s court here yesterday to assist in investigations.
The remand order against the 35-year-old female business owner was issued by magistrate S. Nisha about 10.45am. She was arrested by the Klang Selatan police.
Lawyer Muhamad Akmel Ari Shamsul Kahar, representing the woman, said his client was arrested at the Section 7 police station on Wednesday.
“She is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
“My client has asked me to initiate civil action against several individuals who are associated with her company,” he said outside the court.
Klang Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsul Amar Ramli confirmed the woman’s arrest.
“The arrest was made following a report lodged against the woman after we discovered that the wedding planner’s office was closed on Tuesday and efforts to contact her proved futile.
“The report was lodged when the complainant suspected that the woman is a fraud.
“Two deposits amounting to RM7,000 have been paid in March this year.
“An agreement had also been signed and the wedding was slated for Oct 1,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Shamsul Amar said other victims of the alleged scam had come forward and their police reports were being compiled by the contingent commercial crime investigation department.
It was reported more than 100 soon-to-be-wed couples swarmed the boutique in Section 7 here on Wednesday to demand their money back.
It was learnt that the business owner was to be at her office to meet with clients and issue refunds to customers amounting to RM500,000.
However, she did not show up and the crowd dispersed at 1.30pm.
