‘500km run by army veterans inspirational’
The patriotism shown by army veterans Nasir Abas, 62, and Krishnan Andy, 60, who completed the 12-day 500km Muhibbah Merdeka Run is an inspiration to all, said Christians for Peace and Harmony in Malaysia (CPHM) chairman Reverend Wong Kim Kong.
Wong said the run was the veterans’ effort to show love and support for the country.
“The run was an effort to remember the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for the nation’s independence and remind all races to live in peace and harmony,” said Wong at the CPHM National Day Appreciation Lunch for veterans at Majestic Hotel here yesterday.
The organisation’s founder and adviser, Jason Leong, said the event was not religious, but a tribute to members of security forces.
“We want to encourage the Christian community to appreciate the sacrifices of the security forces for the country.”
The organisation presented a RM5,000 cheque to Nasir as a token of appreciation.
Nasir and Krishnan started the 500km Merdeka run on Aug 19 at Stadium Darulaman, Alor Star.
The duo crossed the finish line at Dataran Merdeka at 11.30pm yesterday. They attributed their success to each other’s support.
“I told Krishnan to think every day about the finish line. We ran one day at a time. We also took care of our diet for the best recovery as we had to run about 45km a day,” Nasir said.
