‘2 cyclists may still be able to compete’

SUNGAI BULOH: Two national cyclists who were involved in an accident yesterday morning may still have a chance to represent the country in the Asean Para Games, which will be held from Sept 17 to 23.

No decision has been made but Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said it depended on recommendations from the doctors at Sungai Buloh Hospital where they were treated.

“We will observe the athletes’ condition before we make the final decision based on the doctors’ recommendation as we do not want to compromise the athletes’ health,” Khairy said in reference to Khairul Azwan and Khairul Nizam, who may be discharged today.

“They will be kept under observation as they may have injuries that cannot be detected at the moment.

“They may have to miss the games if they do not recover,” he said after visiting the athletes at the hospital.

Another cyclist, Mohamad Syazwan Roshdi, 20, who was training with the group, said there were seven of them in a group yesterday morning.

He was with two other cyclists, Faizal Mohd Noh and Aiman Asyraff Ahmad Bajuri, about 100m behind the other four cyclists, who were accompanied by Johari.

By the time they turned into a curved section of the road, they saw the five lying on the road.

Syazwan said the team had trained on the route since midMay and this was the first accident they had encountered.
