Malaysia’s No 2 mixed doubles pair stun World No 10 Kian Meng-Pei Jing in Korea Open

IT meant more than just bragging rights for Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie who upset World No 10 Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing in the second round of the Korea Open yesterday.
The Malaysian No 2 mixed doubles duo showed great maturity as they clawed back from a game down to see off their higher ranked teammates 24-26, 2118, 21-18 to reach their maiden Super Series quarter-finals.
“It feels great because our win also proves that we are improving,” said Shevon when contacted in Seoul.
“For Soon Huat and I, this is a huge encouragement because Kian Meng-Pei Jing are far superior to us.”
The Kuala Lumpur Sea Games silver medallists will play German qualifiers Marvin Emil Seidel-Linda Efler for a place in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Also through the last eight stage were Chan Peng SoonCheah Yee See, who continued their impressive run with a brilliant 16-21, 21-18, 21-16 upset win over second seeds Chris and Gabriel Adcock of England.
Peng Soon-Yee See, will play South Korea’s Seo Seung Jae-Kim Ha Na in the quarterfinals.
It was, however, the end of the road for men’s doubles Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and women’s pair Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi went down 21-16, 22-20 to Indonesia’s Marcus Gideon Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo while Fie Cho-Jing Yi were soundly beaten 21-7, 2117 by China’s Huang Yaqiong-Yu Xiaohan.
