O’Brien is oh, so tough

Actor Dylan O’Brien reveals how he soldiered on despite serious injuries to complete action thriller American Assassin

NEW action thriller is directed by Michael Cuesta (of fame) and is based on the novel of the same name by Vince Flynn. It features rugged hero Mitch Rapp, who loses his parents and girlfriend to a terrorist attack.

Recruited by the CIA, he is then trained by Cold War veteran Stan Hurley to become a black ops operative.

Together they investigat­e a wave of attacks on military and civilian targets, and have to stop a mysterious operative, nicknamed Ghost, who is intent on starting a world war.

Mitch is played by Dylan O’Brien, who has starred in the TV series (2011).The 26-year-old New York City-born actor also starred in series of movies.

During filming of the latest instalment of the series titled O’Brien seriously injured himself and had to be hospitalis­ed.

YOU WERE RECOVERING FROM INJURIES DURING FILMING. HOW DID YOU COPE?

It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. To be honest, it was a really difficult time. But I’m glad that I pushed through and did it. It’s something that will always be very special to me.

HOW LONG WAS THE PERIOD BETWEEN YOUR ACCIDENT AND THE FILMING OF

I started filming seven months after the accident. I wasn’t allowed to do anything for three months. Then about a month after that, I had to start early training. I still had a lot of limitation­s at that point. It was just stretching and getting back on my feet.

We ramped up the training once it got to the fifth and sixth month. I was then able to do more strenuous stuff.

But mentally, that was the biggest battle. It was the biggest shock to the system. I don’t have any control over it. It’s just how the body and the brain react when
