Swift’s answer to all the flak

-

LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO Taylor Swift

THIS song dethroned off the Billboard Hot 100, which had enjoyed the No.1 spot for four months. If not for Taylor Swift’s tune, would have set an all-time record for the most weeks at the top of a chart, especially for a Spanish language track.

At the time of writing, Swift has become the first female to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart this year, setting yet another record for herself. Barely a week into the release of the song, Swift’s latest revenge-diss-shade throwing track has got all eyes on the songstress. It doesn’t matter which end of the spectrum you’re at. Love her or hate her, Swift’s ability to stay relevant with her music is undeniable.

After going on a year-long hiatus, this new track wasn’t something anybody expected. Which is exactly why it’s doing so well. Did I mention she also trademarked some of the lyrics from her latest songs? That includes the infamous “I’m sorry the IF I’M LUCKY Jason Derulo

JASON Derulo returns with another attempt at making a hit song with

but it sounds like a big miss. His previous track, featuring Nicki Minaj wasn’t the best song but Nicki sure killed it with her part.

It does make you question if Derulo could ever redeem himself from his and days. did receive some buzz but it’s definitely not a fan favourite. old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Oh? Cus she’s dead!”

Musically, Swift has certainly evolved and changed tremendously over the years from the country song days. When I first heard , Iwas honestly not a fan. In fact, I thought she could’ve done way better with a comeback single.

Expectations were high but what we didn’t foresee were the visuals she has been waiting to drop. Let’s admit it: that was a complete game changer!

is the answer to everything the tabloids have been asking of Swift. From Kanye, Kim K and Katy to her ex-boyfriends dramas, Swift addressed them all in the song.

Now we know why she silenced herself when questioned. That’s because Swift doesn’t respond with an answer, she does it with a song! In this case, a full-fledged album! The song with the audio alone really isn’t that great but when paired with the music video, it’s a whole different story. I was hooked from scene to scene.

Every frame of the video tells a story of WHAT LOVERS DO Maroon 5 ft. SZA

POST-Cold Maroon 5 is back after a hiatus. Seriously though, what’s with artistes going on a break? Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith.

Could that be the formula to an even greater comeback? Sheeran was a pretty fine example, though; he went on to win Artist of The Year at the recent 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.

Maroon 5’s latest single,

has SZA on board for an upbeat and infectious romp with Adam Levine crooning effortlessly in his signature falsetto. It’s a perfect

According to Derulo, this track was inspired by his previous relationships that didn’t work out and he went on saying: “hopefully that situation can pan out in the next life.” isn’t overly repetitive like some of his previous songs but I felt the hooks were too predictable and boring. It’s like he was recycling older hit songs. Although the lyrics aren’t exactly cringeworthy, it didn’t stand out with the beats either. In fact, the intro part of the tune reminded me so much of Shawn Mendes’ its own. She even left us with hidden meanings in almost every scene. From the Nils Sjoberg tombstone in the opening scene, where she crawls out from earth in her

dress, to the single dollar in the diamond bathtubs and the names on her Junior Jewels T-shirt in the

music video.

Overall, combination. SZA’s beautiful vocals definitely adds to the overall sound of the track, which is about gambling for love, something most of us do or have done. The lyrics are simple, straightforward and radio-friendly.

Although it isn’t exactly a happy love song, it’s very catchy and dance-inducing. “I bet the house on you/ Am I lucky or not, lucky or not, lucky or not?” Levine sings. SZA then returns the love with “Ooooh, oooh, been wishin’ for you, Ooh, ooh, tryna’ do what lovers do (ooh)”. It a modern take on contemporary love.

I have a good feeling about this song making its way into the local airwaves soon.

only not as good.

Don’t get me wrong, Derulo’s vocals have always been great no doubt. But this isn’t about his vocal abilities, it’s about the quality of the song.

In my opinion, this track was a disappointment and so was the music video. From start to end, it was just him dancing with the car lights in the background. Such a vacant cliche! I blame Taylor Swift for setting the bar too high.

Rating: 2/5

is an average jam with repetitive choruses and hooks but saved by an incredibly well planned out music video. I’m still torn between loving or hating it.

Let’s see what else Swift has in store for us. Her new album, will be out on Nov 10. Looking forward!
