THE government will continue to work hard to provide affordable housing to all Malaysians. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said, to date, the government had constructed 83,750 units of affordable homes under the People’s Housing Programme (PPR). Another 25,000 units are under construction and are expected to be completed by 2020, at a cost of RM6 billion.

He said PPR homes were heavily subsidised by the government and cited the example of PPR Sri Aman in Jinjang, here, where housing units were being sold at RM35,000 each, even though the actual cost was RM150,000.

“If you look at the market value for PPR Sri Aman, it is about RM200,000 per unit, however the government is offering it at about RM35,000 to the rakyat,” he said.

“In truth, it adds to the asset value of the people, as its value will increase in the future. In fact, it will be an inheritance for the family,” he said at a key handing over ceremony for the PPR Sri Aman project in Jinjang yesterday.

The project has 1,600 units with a floor space of 700 sq m each. It is the first project to include a non-Muslim funeral parlour among its facilities.

At the event, Najib also launched the 1Malaysia Transit Home Programme. Under the scheme, 2,010 housing units will be built by 2020.

He said the project was meant to meet the needs of young working adults and newly-married couples, and would include a rent-to-own scheme for a maximum of five years.

“Through this scheme the young working adults will be able to save and buy their own homes at the end of the rental term. “They will be paying RM500 as rent but RM250 from it will be kept as savings. So, at the end of the agreement they will have RM15,000 to pay as deposit for a new house,” he said.

Najib said 1,244 housing units would be developed in Kepong and 766 units in Batu. He said there would 400 sq m studio type units and 550 sq m couple units, and both types would have two rooms.

Najib said the transit scheme was a new business model that featured cooperation between the public and private sectors.

“Using cross subsidy, the project will include another 3,824 affordable housing units and 2,010 transit units that will be rented out.”
