9 WORKERS HURT IN WAREHOUSE EXPLOSION

Gas cylinder used to cook soup explodes at mezzanine floor

NINE workers of a kopitiam company chain were severely injured when a gas cylinder exploded at its warehouse yesterday.

The 8am incident at Jalan Subang 10 here saw five of the workers sustaining serious burns with two critically injured.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations management chief Alimaddia Bukri said the explosion occurred at the mezzanine floor of the warehouse involving a gas cylinder used to cook soup.

He said the explosion saw at least two people hurt when they were hit by splinters, while the rest sustained burn injuries.

“The incident saw five of the victims sustaining burn injuries on their bodies.

“Two of the victims, both aged 21, are in critical condition with 80 per cent and 70 per cent burns, while three others sustained between 20 and 40 per cent burns, including one who broke his leg.

“The five were rushed to Serdang Hospital, where they are being treated at its Emergency Department’s Red Zone.”

Alimaddia said two other victims, aged 25 and 28 respective­ly, sustained serious injuries where one of them was hurt on his head, while another broke his hand.

Two others in their 20s sustained light burn on their hands, and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

All of the victims are of Myanmar and Nepal nationalit­ies.

Alimaddia said the department received a call on the incident at 8.04am, and dispatched two fire engines and an ambulance to the scene.
