DPM to attend Interpol general assembly in China

BEIJING: With terrorism a growing threat in the region, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s presence at the 86th Interpol General Assembly here reflects Malaysia’s commitment to combating militancy and other international crime.

Zahid, who is also home minister, will arrive here today on a three-day working trip, which also includes the general assembly.

He is expected to attend the opening ceremony tomorrow before paying a courtesy call on Chinese Premier Li Keqiang later in the day.

The Home Ministry, in a statement, said Zahid would also pay a courtesy call on Meng Jianzhu, China’s Political and Legal Affairs secretary.

“Both sides will exchange bilateral security cooperation, including counter-terrorism initiatives though the establishment of the Counter-Messaging Centre in Malaysia,” the statement said.

It said Zahid and Meng would discuss bilateral cooperation in other security matters, such as international crime networks and cybercrime.

The visit will be Zahid’s third working visit to China since assuming office in July 2015.

This year’s Interpol general assembly will focus on efforts in providing an effective communication platform among all member states in information sharing, as well as enhancing the capacity to combat international crime in all forms.

The assembly, themed “Connecting Police for a Safer World”, will also emphasise its role in promoting cooperation among police agencies around the world in upholding international peace and security against increased global threats.

It will be attended by high-level delegates from 157 countries.
