3 schools remain closed for clean-ups

-

ALOR STAR: Two schools in Kedah and one in Perlis will be closed today for clean-ups.

Classes will, however, resume in schools used as flood relief centres in both states.

In Jitra, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said SK Seri Banai here would be reopened tomorrow.

SK Bukit Hijau in Bukit Pinang will remain closed today as a road leading to the school, which is being used as a relief centre, is inundated.

“For schools that are being used as evacuation centres, classes will continue as usual, but the evacuees will be placed in suitable rooms for their comfort,” he said after visiting flood victims at the SMK Seri Mahawangsa relief centre here yesterday.

Among the schools used as flood relief centres in the state are SK Titi Gajah, SK Alor Mengkudu, SK Bukit Hijau, SK Seri Gunung and SK Bukit Pinang in Kota Setar district, while in Kubang Pasu, the schools are SK Kodiang Lama, SK Jitra 2 and SMK Seri Mahawangsa.

In Kangar, Perlis Education Department director Izmi Ismail said SK Seri Indera, which was hit by a flood on Friday, would be closed today for clean-up.

He said the school had 787 pupils and 53 teachers.

Izmi urged parents to join the teachers to clean up the affected classrooms today.

“The headmasters will fix the replacement date for the classes,” he said during his visit to the school yesterday.

He said classes in other schools would resume today, including schools that were being used as flood relief centres.

There are six schools in Perlis being used as flood relief centres, namely SK Bintong, SK Panggau, SK Sri Perlis, SK Sena, SK Kubang Gajah and SK Kampung Serdang.

Checks showed that most of the flood evacuees were placed in the school halls, while those occupying the classrooms had been moved to other rooms to allow the classes to resume today.
